job hunt

On my day off yesterday I had an interview at Free People. Little did I know that 20 other people were being interviewed on the same day and who knows how many are being interviewed this whole week! The manager who interviewed me is going to be in Canada the next couple of days so I should hear from her early next week. I was a little disappointed so many other people were vying for the same position and I know some of them are probably going to be in the city longer than just the summer, which makes them more desirable employees. I am not going to get too hung up on it though, who knows I could get lucky. After I got home from the interview I called the Nordstrom Rack at Union Square because I had already applied there online before I left Seattle, but hadn't heard anything. The HR person was out of the office so I left her a message, I guess we will see if anything comes out of that. I also scoured craig's list and applied to a few short term jobs. I got an e-mail back last night from this guy who organizes booths at street fairs in New York for the Daily News. Basically I would be telling people about subscriptions to the Daily News. The events are only on Saturday and Sunday and all the money I earn is under the table, which is super nice. The guy said I could for sure work this weekend ($100!), but I still have to interview with him on Friday. I am really excited because even though it isn't that many hours at least it is something so I can have some extra spending money here.

Yesterday I also crossed the street and read my book in Washington Square Park. It was so nice to be outside in the shade and watch all of the cute puppies! There are so many dogs in New York and many of them are english bulldogs. I have been slacking on reading my book because I have been going out to dinners and been obsessed with The Tudors, but I was glad to have some time to catch up with my reading.

Last night I went with my dad and some of the people he works with (a bigger group this time) to the Post House, which is a steak house on the upper east side. I had not eaten a really great steak in awhile, so I was very pleased with my filet, mashed potatoes (they were so smooth and creamy -- the best) and creamed spinach. Thinking back on it now I should have walked all the way to work today to work all of it off. I really want to start going to the gym now that I have my schedule worked out, I just have to figure out where it is and get the motivation to go.

Every Wednesday in June Wenner Media has luncheons for all of the interns in the company and prominent leaders in the company come to speak and answer questions. Today was the first one and it started off at the top with Jann Wenner, who started Rolling Stone and is the head hancho of Wenner. Everything he said was very interesting, he talked a lot about music (some of his favorites are The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Beatles) and culture. He said our culture gives people a better window into what is going on in America than politics because there are so many lies spread and PR motivations behind what politicians say. I have to agree with him. In politics it is so hard to know who is telling the truth because every issue turns into a he said she said battle. Party lines have become to deeply drawn that it has become more and more difficult for things to get done in Washington. But I know I can count on my friend Katie Haines to get things done in the government some day!

I am really excited for tomorrow because after work I get to cover a Kanye West concert for Us. I'm not sure if I get to interview him or some of the other artists, but if I do that would be awesome to meet him or Kid Cudi -- can't wait!
